LESSON ACTIVITY IN MOODLE WITH AI · PREPARE YOUR SEED LESSON

Prepare your seed Lesson and review its settings

Turn your understanding of Moodle’s Lesson activity into a small working example that you can use in your collaboration with ChatGPT.

Where are we in the process?

So far: you have explored how a Lesson works and recognised its principal building blocks.

On this page: prepare or inspect your seed and choose suitable starting settings. This brings together roadmap steps 3 and 4.

Next: test the seed as a learner before backing it up. You do not need to generate your larger target Lesson yet.

Keep the seed small and purposeful

Your seed is a working reference: a few pages, questions, feedback and navigation choices that demonstrate how a Lesson is constructed. Your target Lesson is the larger activity you eventually want to create for your learners.

You can build or adapt your own seed, or use the example supplied in this course. In either case, inspect its pages and settings so you can explain what it demonstrates.

A seed need not contain every available feature. ChatGPT may research additional structures when needed; any generated result must still be restored and tested.

Watch: settings for our seed Lesson

This short walkthrough explains the starting settings used in our example. You have already watched Mary Cooch’s overview; here, focus on why these choices suit a seed that teachers will explore and reuse.

Pause the video whenever you want to compare a setting with your own Lesson.

As you work in Moodle, select the question-mark help icons to read the explanations. Expand Show more to reveal additional settings.

What to look for

Make exploration easy

For this seed, leave opening dates, deadlines, time limits and passwords disabled. Allow question retries and Lesson retakes so participants can try different routes and inspect the feedback.

Keep navigation intentional

Use the normal Lesson path and check the jumps on each page. A menu can help exploration, but may let learners bypass an intended route. A progress bar is most useful with straightforward navigation.

Provide feedback and keep completion simple

With default feedback switched off, supply your own useful explanations for answers. For this demonstration, use a practice Lesson with retakes allowed.

Our recommended completion requirement is Require end reached, without a passing-grade or minimum-time requirement. Teachers can choose different conditions for their target Lessons.

Carry the settings into your target Lesson

Settings in the seed backup provide a starting point for the generated target. Ask ChatGPT explicitly to preserve them unless you request changes, and check them after restoring the result. Some settings also depend on the destination Moodle site and course.

Preserve the seed Lesson’s activity settings unless I explicitly request a change. Replace its name, description and learning content as appropriate. Report any settings you change, and flag any that depend on the destination course or site.

Your target Lesson’s settings should support its actual teaching and assessment purpose. Permissive seed settings are useful starting choices, not requirements for every Lesson.

Checkpoint: ready to test your seed?

  • I have chosen the supplied seed or created or adapted my own.
  • I can identify its content pages, questions, feedback and intended routes.
  • I have reviewed its settings and used the help icons where needed.
  • I have checked its completion requirements.

Next step: follow every route as a learner, try correct and incorrect answers, and check the ending. Once the seed works, you are ready to back it up.
